Who do you want to be?

When you are a child, you are asked the same question multiple times; What do you want to be when you grow up? Mostly obvious and practical choices follow, such as Doctor, Firefighter, Astronaut, Nurse, Pilot, Magician, and that is because our corner of reality is still growing. Every day of our life’s journey are opportunities to expand our piece of reality and that continues to shape the future journey. You want to be a teacher? Wonderful, of what subject? Oh you just finished medical school, that is amazing, now what specialty would you like to study? There are endless options, and it comes down to choice. Choice… that right there is only one general piece to why even as an adult we tend to say… Eh, I don’t know what I want to be when I grow up.

As a kid I wanted to be a nurse, but I became a babysitter and then a lifeguard. I had a great earth science teacher, so I said great I can do that… Then my state changed the requirements… logic said why would you have a teaching Bachelors and a masters? I decided to go hardcore science as a geologist, then to fulfill requirements of gas in the car I worked in retail… I wouldn’t have minded being a great General Manager, but life threw a curve ball, once I settled onto the new path of the journey i decided I needed to help make the people and processes better, then the tools, so I became a trainer, then a Quality analyst. The Product and Business analysts didn’t understand the staff they were building for so I became both of those, and then a manager… and the journey didn’t stop there. Methodologies creeped in, then duty, and passion, and new roles and responsibilities. The point is, we always have the opportunity to grow, so how do we do that? I can promise an interesting ride as we find out. Some of this will be personal, some of it will be work, some of it will be a combination, but ultimately seeking to understand all the ways we can make our journey in both of those areas come together for the best possible outcome.

Let’s go on this journey together. Piece together the experiences, attributes, knowledge, and values that will allow us to become what we want to be next, because lets face it, we will grow old no matter what, but we get to choose what and how along the way.

Until next time…
